05/09/2011 - 07/09/2011 BRIEF:
Many modern composers have relinquished traditional musical notation in favour of their own invented visual systems employing graphic or pictorial elements.
Their compositions take the form of abstract drawings filled with complex pictograms, evocative mark-making, gestural symbols and intricate codes of numbers, letters and colour.
Exploring the intersection of drawing and sound , this brief is designed to expand your drawing vocabulary and challenge your notions of what drawing is and what can be drawn.
Working on the paper supplied, we want you to respond to the music played in the studio and create your own sound maps/journeys/landscapes utilizing the wide range of media provided.
What do drums, strings and brass look like? What do electronic sounds look like? What do they look like all together? What are the visual noises? How can they be described and represented?
